Paul Haley

Sportive Event Delivery

Paul’s background is event management in the conference and events business. He joined Flamme Rouge in March 2022 and brings his expertise to cycling events and sportives. In between working on the sportives Paul is always out on his bike – he loves the flats, Belgium beers and double espressos – hates hills and punctures.

I can’t get the dam thing off?”

Mark Brewer

The Boss

Mark’s been involved in cycling for over two decades on the retail side of the industry. He launched the Cyclery Bike Shop and café on Westerham Green which became a firm favourite amongst local cycling clubs and cyclists as well as launching Westerham Cycling Club where he is club chairman. In 2018 Mark set up the Velo Barn which quickly established itself as popular café stop for cyclists riding along Pilgrims Way as well as gaining a well deserved reputation for great bike servicing. Mark is responsible for sportive course technical requirements and compliance.

Head Tech & Mechanics

Steve is our tech guy and lead mechanic. He’s been a mechanic for over ten years and is an avid road biker – he’s like a whippet up those long steep climbs always chasing Strava segments. Steve has been known to step over to the dark side occasionally and has admitted he likes gravel! Day to day Steve runs the bike servicing at the Velo Barn near Westerham. He’s also a cracking barista and can explain in great detail (bore you with) the intricacies of how to make the perfect coffee.

Phrase most often heard from Steve

The Hell of the Ashdown

01 The Biggest Sportive in Kent

The Hell of the Ashdown or HOTA as it’s more commonly known, is the season opener for the UK market. Traditionally taking place the last Sunday in February the Sportive sees over 1500 riders test their winter legs against the weather and The Hills of Kent and West Sussex, including the dreaded ‘Wall’ aka Kids Hill in Ashdown Forest. Formerly run by Catford CC, in 2022 Westerham CC and Flamme Rouge Events became the joint sportive organisers with Chartwell Cancer Trust the event’s charity partner.

02 The Wolfe of Westerham

Now in its 5th year the Wolfe of Westerham is an epic summer day’s ride out around Kent and the Surrey borders taking place in early July. The event HQ and riders start/ finish location is Westerham Brewery. Riders take on either the punchy short route of 40 miles or the longer route of 72 miles – both routes take cyclists up the feared Yorks Hill – there’s no embarrassment in walking up Yorks we’ve all done it! When riders get back to the brewery there’s a free pint to gulp down and reflect on a great day’s work.

03 The Countryside Ride

The CofK is one of the UK’s longest running Cyclo Sportives – first taking place in 1997 – and now after an absence of several years, Flamme Rouge Events is delighted to resurrect the event and to be the new sportive organiser with Macmillan Cancer Support as our Charity Event partner. Setting off from Sevenoaks Prep School, riders soon find themselves cycling through some of Kent’s finest countryside riding past oast houses, orchards, barley and hop fields.

06 Pain going uphill!

Mention the word Brasted to local cyclists and you see them visibly shudder. Brasted Hill was used for the inaugural 1931 National Hill Climb and in 2022 local club Westerham CC is paying homage with Brasted as its hill of choice for its Annual Hill Club Climb Competition. Flamme Rouge Events are taking care of Event Logistics; Liaising with the Local Council and Road Authorities; Full Risk Assessment and providing on the day staffing to help with Event Registration, Parking and Mechanical Support.

Rider Testimonials

I just wanted to commend you on putting on such a good event. It was very well organised and the feed stops were just next level. I wish I was there just to eat! The signage was excellent too.
Thank you to you and all the organisers for a great day in the sunshine yesterday. It was well organised and marshalled, a cracking route with scenic views and sufficient bite in the profile to make it hurt a bit! The beer and frittes at the end were also extremely welcome! Looking forward to next year already.
Let me congratulate you on a really wonderful event, the course was spectacular, some of those winding roads were amazing and the combination of hills exhausting even to a seasoned 62 year old climber like me.
Top marks for an awesome day, all your sweat, toil, attention to detail, dealing with daft questions, swapping entries, ample loos, music, razzmatazz, crossbar stickers, Brian Smith etc - top class sportive!
Basing the start at the brewery was a great idea as lots of space for riders to relax after the ride and a pint of beer for finishing was a fantastic bonus after a hard morning in the saddle. A massive thank you to yourself as well as everyone else involved in organising and getting it to run so smoothly on the day. This is an event I can’t wait to enter again, well done all.
Huge thanks for all your efforts to make the event yesterday such a success. I’ve never taken part in an event like it before, so it was all new to me. The signage, support and overall vibe of the event was fantastic. Next time, I hope to make a better time – this year it was about surviving!
I have done lots of sportives in the UK as well as abroad, and I must say with regard to the variety of food at the feed stations, you excelled yourself. I am not a vegetarian myself but it was nice to see a range of vegan friendly foods for those that are, and also the option of hot food at the second feed stop was very welcome.
